Philippines

The Philippines runs the most generous retirement visa in Asia. The Special Resident Retiree Visa gives indefinite permanent residence in exchange for a bank deposit that can be as little as 15,000 dollars for an applicant over 50 with a pension, and the deposit can later be converted into a property investment. English is an official language and is used in government, medicine, business and education, which makes daily life easier than anywhere else in Asia except Malaysia. The Philippines is also the destination with the deepest historical and family connections to the United States. Against that: healthcare quality outside Metro Manila and Cebu is limited, typhoons are a genuine annual planning factor, and infrastructure outside the main cities is poor. The SRRV was restructured in September 2025, lowering the minimum age to 40 and reshaping the deposit tiers.

Belize

Belize is the only country in Central America where English is the official language, and its Qualified Retired Persons program is built around a simple proposition: show 2,000 dollars a month of foreign income from age 40, and receive a residence status that exempts you from Belizean tax on all foreign income, allows duty-free import of household goods and a vehicle, and requires only one month of presence per year. The Belize dollar has been pegged at two to one against the U.S. dollar for decades, which removes exchange-rate risk. The trade-offs are real: Belize is a very small country of under half a million people, healthcare is limited and serious cases go to Mexico, Guatemala or the United States, and it has one of the higher homicide rates in the region, concentrated in specific areas of Belize City.

The real difference

  • Philippines costs roughly 31 percent less per month for a couple living comfortably.
  • Philippines has the lower income bar: $800 a month against $2,000.
  • Philippines has materially stronger healthcare on our assessment, which matters more than any other line here if you expect to need it.

Philippines or Belize: common questions

Is Philippines or Belize cheaper to retire in?

Philippines is cheaper. A couple living comfortably needs about $1,800 a month there, against $2,600 in the other, a difference of roughly 31 percent. That is a large enough gap to change what your income supports.

Which has the lower income requirement?

Philippines, at $800 a month on the Special Resident Retiree Visa (SRRV) Classic, against $2,000 for the other. Remember that a visa threshold is what the government asks you to prove, not what you need to live on, and the two numbers are often very different.

Which is faster to get residency in?

Philippines is typically faster: about 3 months for Philippines and 4 months for Belize. In both cases the decision is rarely the slow part; appointment availability and document lead times are.

Do my documents need an apostille for both?

Yes. Both Philippines and Belize are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille is the whole chain for each. Your FBI Identity History Summary still goes to the U.S. Department of State rather than a Secretary of State, because it is a federal record.

Which has better healthcare?

Philippines scores higher, 5 against 3 out of 10. If you expect to need care, weight this above almost everything else on this page.
