Philippines

The Philippines runs the most generous retirement visa in Asia. The Special Resident Retiree Visa gives indefinite permanent residence in exchange for a bank deposit that can be as little as 15,000 dollars for an applicant over 50 with a pension, and the deposit can later be converted into a property investment. English is an official language and is used in government, medicine, business and education, which makes daily life easier than anywhere else in Asia except Malaysia. The Philippines is also the destination with the deepest historical and family connections to the United States. Against that: healthcare quality outside Metro Manila and Cebu is limited, typhoons are a genuine annual planning factor, and infrastructure outside the main cities is poor. The SRRV was restructured in September 2025, lowering the minimum age to 40 and reshaping the deposit tiers.

Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic runs the quickest retirement residency in the Americas. Under Law 171-07 a pensionado with 1,500 dollars a month of pension income is fast-tracked to permanent residency, commonly in a couple of months rather than the year or more that Costa Rica or Uruguay take. The law also grants a package of exemptions: on import duty for household goods and a vehicle, on property transfer tax, on the tax on dividends and interest from Dominican sources, and partial relief on property tax. It is Caribbean, so it is warm year round, it is two and a half hours from Miami, and the north coast around SosĂşa and Cabarete has hosted a foreign community for forty years. The trade-offs are hurricane exposure, infrastructure that includes frequent power interruptions outside the resort areas, and healthcare that is good in Santo Domingo and Santiago and limited elsewhere.

The real difference

  • Philippines costs roughly 14 percent less per month for a couple living comfortably.
  • Philippines has the lower income bar: $800 a month against $1,500.

Philippines or Dominican Republic: common questions

Is Philippines or Dominican Republic cheaper to retire in?

Philippines is cheaper. A couple living comfortably needs about $1,800 a month there, against $2,100 in the other, a difference of roughly 14 percent. That is a large enough gap to change what your income supports.

Which has the lower income requirement?

Philippines, at $800 a month on the Special Resident Retiree Visa (SRRV) Classic, against $1,500 for the other. Remember that a visa threshold is what the government asks you to prove, not what you need to live on, and the two numbers are often very different.

Which is faster to get residency in?

Philippines is typically faster: about 3 months for Philippines and 4 months for Dominican Republic. In both cases the decision is rarely the slow part; appointment availability and document lead times are.

Do my documents need an apostille for both?

Yes. Both Philippines and Dominican Republic are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille is the whole chain for each. Your FBI Identity History Summary still goes to the U.S. Department of State rather than a Secretary of State, because it is a federal record.

Which has better healthcare?

They score similarly on our assessment, 5 and 5 out of 10. At that point the deciding factor is not the country but the distance from where you would actually live to a hospital that can handle something serious.
