Philippines
The Philippines runs the most generous retirement visa in Asia. The Special Resident Retiree Visa gives indefinite permanent residence in exchange for a bank deposit that can be as little as 15,000 dollars for an applicant over 50 with a pension, and the deposit can later be converted into a property investment. English is an official language and is used in government, medicine, business and education, which makes daily life easier than anywhere else in Asia except Malaysia. The Philippines is also the destination with the deepest historical and family connections to the United States. Against that: healthcare quality outside Metro Manila and Cebu is limited, typhoons are a genuine annual planning factor, and infrastructure outside the main cities is poor. The SRRV was restructured in September 2025, lowering the minimum age to 40 and reshaping the deposit tiers.
Chile
Chile has the strongest institutions, the best infrastructure and the highest income per head in South America, plus a central valley climate that is close to a mirror of coastal California. It is stable, orderly and safe by regional standards, though urban crime in Santiago has risen noticeably in recent years. The catch for prospective retirees is that Chile rewrote its immigration law in 2021 and 2022, and the practical effect is that you must now apply for a residence visa from outside Chile at a consulate. The old approach of entering as a tourist and converting inside the country was deliberately closed. There is no dedicated retirement category; retirees generally use the temporary residence visa for people with their own means, which is assessed on the sufficiency of income rather than against a published figure.
The real difference
- Philippines costs roughly 33 percent less per month for a couple living comfortably.
- Philippines has the lower income bar: $800 a month against $1,500.
- Chile has materially stronger healthcare on our assessment, which matters more than any other line here if you expect to need it.
- Philippines is substantially faster to residency: about 3 months against 8.
Philippines or Chile: common questions
Is Philippines or Chile cheaper to retire in?
Philippines is cheaper. A couple living comfortably needs about $1,800 a month there, against $2,700 in the other, a difference of roughly 33 percent. That is a large enough gap to change what your income supports.
Which has the lower income requirement?
Philippines, at $800 a month on the Special Resident Retiree Visa (SRRV) Classic, against $1,500 for the other. Remember that a visa threshold is what the government asks you to prove, not what you need to live on, and the two numbers are often very different.
Which is faster to get residency in?
Philippines is typically faster: about 3 months for Philippines and 8 months for Chile. In both cases the decision is rarely the slow part; appointment availability and document lead times are.
Do my documents need an apostille for both?
Yes. Both Philippines and Chile are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille is the whole chain for each. Your FBI Identity History Summary still goes to the U.S. Department of State rather than a Secretary of State, because it is a federal record.
Which has better healthcare?
Chile scores higher, 8 against 5 out of 10. If you expect to need care, weight this above almost everything else on this page.
