Nicaragua
Nicaragua has the cheapest cost of living in Central America and a retirement residency program requiring only 600 dollars a month of pension income from age 45, historically among the most accessible anywhere. Granada and LeĂłn are beautiful colonial cities, the Pacific coast around San Juan del Sur has a long-standing foreign community, and prices are genuinely low. However, the political situation since 2018 has been the dominant fact. Widespread unrest, the subsequent government response, the closure or expulsion of thousands of civil society organisations, and continuing U.S. sanctions and travel advisories have all changed the calculation substantially. Many foreign residents left after 2018 and property values fell. Anyone considering Nicaragua should read the current U.S. State Department advisory in full and speak to people currently living there rather than relying on older material.
Ecuador
Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency, which removes exchange-rate risk entirely, and it sets its retirement visa threshold at three times the national minimum wage, which for 2026 is 1,446 dollars a month. Cuenca, a UNESCO colonial city at 2,500 metres with a mild spring climate, has been the single most recommended retirement city in Latin America for over a decade and has a large, organised American community. Ecuador also gives residents aged 65 and over a legislated package of benefits under its tercera edad law: reductions on utilities, public transport, air tickets and a refund of value-added tax. Set against that, security in Ecuador deteriorated significantly from 2023, particularly in Guayaquil and the coastal provinces, and this is the most important change to the picture in the last decade. The highland cities have been far less affected but the country-level statistics are worse than they were.
The real difference
- Nicaragua costs roughly 17 percent less per month for a couple living comfortably.
- Nicaragua has the lower income bar: $600 a month against $1,446.
- Ecuador uses or pegs to the U.S. dollar, so your income has no exchange-rate exposure there. The other does not.
- Ecuador has materially stronger healthcare on our assessment, which matters more than any other line here if you expect to need it.
- Ecuador is substantially faster to residency: about 4 months against 9.
Nicaragua or Ecuador: common questions
Is Nicaragua or Ecuador cheaper to retire in?
Nicaragua is cheaper. A couple living comfortably needs about $1,500 a month there, against $1,800 in the other, a difference of roughly 17 percent. That is a large enough gap to change what your income supports.
Which has the lower income requirement?
Nicaragua, at $600 a month on the Pensionado Residency, against $1,446 for the other. Remember that a visa threshold is what the government asks you to prove, not what you need to live on, and the two numbers are often very different.
Which is faster to get residency in?
Ecuador is typically faster: about 9 months for Nicaragua and 4 months for Ecuador. In both cases the decision is rarely the slow part; appointment availability and document lead times are.
Do my documents need an apostille for both?
Yes. Both Nicaragua and Ecuador are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille is the whole chain for each. Your FBI Identity History Summary still goes to the U.S. Department of State rather than a Secretary of State, because it is a federal record.
What about currency risk?
Ecuador uses or pegs to the U.S. dollar, so a dollar income carries no exchange-rate exposure there. The other does not, which means a move against you is a permanent cut in purchasing power that you cannot earn back on a fixed income. For a retiree this is worth more than it first appears.
Which has better healthcare?
Ecuador scores higher, 6 against 3 out of 10. If you expect to need care, weight this above almost everything else on this page.
