Ecuador
Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency, which removes exchange-rate risk entirely, and it sets its retirement visa threshold at three times the national minimum wage, which for 2026 is 1,446 dollars a month. Cuenca, a UNESCO colonial city at 2,500 metres with a mild spring climate, has been the single most recommended retirement city in Latin America for over a decade and has a large, organised American community. Ecuador also gives residents aged 65 and over a legislated package of benefits under its tercera edad law: reductions on utilities, public transport, air tickets and a refund of value-added tax. Set against that, security in Ecuador deteriorated significantly from 2023, particularly in Guayaquil and the coastal provinces, and this is the most important change to the picture in the last decade. The highland cities have been far less affected but the country-level statistics are worse than they were.
Argentina
Buenos Aires is the most European city in the Americas: belle époque architecture, an extraordinary cafe and theatre culture, world-class beef and wine, and public hospitals that treat everyone including foreigners free of charge. For a dollar-earning retiree it can be astonishingly cheap. The problem is the reason it is cheap. Argentina has cycled through inflation crises, currency controls, multiple exchange rates and debt defaults for decades, and while the macroeconomic picture has changed substantially since 2024, planning a twenty-year retirement around Argentine monetary policy requires either a high tolerance for volatility or a deliberate strategy of holding assets outside the country. Argentina also offers one of the fastest naturalisation routes in the world at two years of residence.
The real difference
- Ecuador costs roughly 14 percent less per month for a couple living comfortably.
- Ecuador uses or pegs to the U.S. dollar, so your income has no exchange-rate exposure there. The other does not.
- Ecuador is substantially faster to residency: about 4 months against 9.
Ecuador or Argentina: common questions
Is Ecuador or Argentina cheaper to retire in?
Ecuador is cheaper. A couple living comfortably needs about $1,800 a month there, against $2,100 in the other, a difference of roughly 14 percent. That is a large enough gap to change what your income supports.
Which has the lower income requirement?
Ecuador, at $1,446 a month on the Temporary Resident Visa: Pensioner (Jubilado), against $1,500 for the other. Remember that a visa threshold is what the government asks you to prove, not what you need to live on, and the two numbers are often very different.
Which is faster to get residency in?
Ecuador is typically faster: about 4 months for Ecuador and 9 months for Argentina. In both cases the decision is rarely the slow part; appointment availability and document lead times are.
Do my documents need an apostille for both?
Yes. Both Ecuador and Argentina are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille is the whole chain for each. Your FBI Identity History Summary still goes to the U.S. Department of State rather than a Secretary of State, because it is a federal record.
What about currency risk?
Ecuador uses or pegs to the U.S. dollar, so a dollar income carries no exchange-rate exposure there. The other does not, which means a move against you is a permanent cut in purchasing power that you cannot earn back on a fixed income. For a retiree this is worth more than it first appears.
Which has better healthcare?
Argentina scores higher, 7 against 6 out of 10. If you expect to need care, weight this above almost everything else on this page.
