Ecuador
Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency, which removes exchange-rate risk entirely, and it sets its retirement visa threshold at three times the national minimum wage, which for 2026 is 1,446 dollars a month. Cuenca, a UNESCO colonial city at 2,500 metres with a mild spring climate, has been the single most recommended retirement city in Latin America for over a decade and has a large, organised American community. Ecuador also gives residents aged 65 and over a legislated package of benefits under its tercera edad law: reductions on utilities, public transport, air tickets and a refund of value-added tax. Set against that, security in Ecuador deteriorated significantly from 2023, particularly in Guayaquil and the coastal provinces, and this is the most important change to the picture in the last decade. The highland cities have been far less affected but the country-level statistics are worse than they were.
Chile
Chile has the strongest institutions, the best infrastructure and the highest income per head in South America, plus a central valley climate that is close to a mirror of coastal California. It is stable, orderly and safe by regional standards, though urban crime in Santiago has risen noticeably in recent years. The catch for prospective retirees is that Chile rewrote its immigration law in 2021 and 2022, and the practical effect is that you must now apply for a residence visa from outside Chile at a consulate. The old approach of entering as a tourist and converting inside the country was deliberately closed. There is no dedicated retirement category; retirees generally use the temporary residence visa for people with their own means, which is assessed on the sufficiency of income rather than against a published figure.
The real difference
- Ecuador costs roughly 33 percent less per month for a couple living comfortably.
- Ecuador uses or pegs to the U.S. dollar, so your income has no exchange-rate exposure there. The other does not.
- Chile has materially stronger healthcare on our assessment, which matters more than any other line here if you expect to need it.
- Ecuador is substantially faster to residency: about 4 months against 8.
Ecuador or Chile: common questions
Is Ecuador or Chile cheaper to retire in?
Ecuador is cheaper. A couple living comfortably needs about $1,800 a month there, against $2,700 in the other, a difference of roughly 33 percent. That is a large enough gap to change what your income supports.
Which has the lower income requirement?
Ecuador, at $1,446 a month on the Temporary Resident Visa: Pensioner (Jubilado), against $1,500 for the other. Remember that a visa threshold is what the government asks you to prove, not what you need to live on, and the two numbers are often very different.
Which is faster to get residency in?
Ecuador is typically faster: about 4 months for Ecuador and 8 months for Chile. In both cases the decision is rarely the slow part; appointment availability and document lead times are.
Do my documents need an apostille for both?
Yes. Both Ecuador and Chile are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille is the whole chain for each. Your FBI Identity History Summary still goes to the U.S. Department of State rather than a Secretary of State, because it is a federal record.
What about currency risk?
Ecuador uses or pegs to the U.S. dollar, so a dollar income carries no exchange-rate exposure there. The other does not, which means a move against you is a permanent cut in purchasing power that you cannot earn back on a fixed income. For a retiree this is worth more than it first appears.
Which has better healthcare?
Chile scores higher, 8 against 6 out of 10. If you expect to need care, weight this above almost everything else on this page.
