Ecuador

Ecuador uses the U.S. dollar as its official currency, which removes exchange-rate risk entirely, and it sets its retirement visa threshold at three times the national minimum wage, which for 2026 is 1,446 dollars a month. Cuenca, a UNESCO colonial city at 2,500 metres with a mild spring climate, has been the single most recommended retirement city in Latin America for over a decade and has a large, organised American community. Ecuador also gives residents aged 65 and over a legislated package of benefits under its tercera edad law: reductions on utilities, public transport, air tickets and a refund of value-added tax. Set against that, security in Ecuador deteriorated significantly from 2023, particularly in Guayaquil and the coastal provinces, and this is the most important change to the picture in the last decade. The highland cities have been far less affected but the country-level statistics are worse than they were.

Colombia

Colombia has become the fastest-growing retirement destination in South America, and the numbers explain why. A retirement visa keyed to three times the Colombian minimum wage puts the threshold near 1,400 dollars a month, well below Mexico or Portugal. The health system is genuinely excellent, ranks among the best in Latin America, and costs a fraction of U.S. prices, with several Medellín and Bogotá hospitals appearing in regional top-ten lists. Medellín sits at 1,500 metres and has a climate so consistent it is called the city of eternal spring, needing neither heating nor air conditioning. The peso has been persistently weak against the dollar, which is painful for Colombians and enormously advantageous for anyone spending dollars. The trade-offs are a real language barrier, security that requires local judgement rather than blanket assumptions, and a currency whose weakness could reverse.

The real difference

  • Ecuador uses or pegs to the U.S. dollar, so your income has no exchange-rate exposure there. The other does not.
  • Colombia has materially stronger healthcare on our assessment, which matters more than any other line here if you expect to need it.

Ecuador or Colombia: common questions

Is Ecuador or Colombia cheaper to retire in?

Ecuador is cheaper. A couple living comfortably needs about $1,800 a month there, against $2,000 in the other, a difference of roughly 10 percent. That gap is small enough that your choice of city inside either country will matter more than the country itself.

Which has the lower income requirement?

Colombia, at $1,370 a month on the Migrant Visa M-11 (Pensionado / Retirement Visa), against $1,446 for the other. Remember that a visa threshold is what the government asks you to prove, not what you need to live on, and the two numbers are often very different.

Which is faster to get residency in?

Colombia is typically faster: about 4 months for Ecuador and 2 months for Colombia. In both cases the decision is rarely the slow part; appointment availability and document lead times are.

Do my documents need an apostille for both?

Yes. Both Ecuador and Colombia are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille is the whole chain for each. Your FBI Identity History Summary still goes to the U.S. Department of State rather than a Secretary of State, because it is a federal record.

What about currency risk?

Ecuador uses or pegs to the U.S. dollar, so a dollar income carries no exchange-rate exposure there. The other does not, which means a move against you is a permanent cut in purchasing power that you cannot earn back on a fixed income. For a retiree this is worth more than it first appears.

Which has better healthcare?

Colombia scores higher, 8 against 6 out of 10. If you expect to need care, weight this above almost everything else on this page.
