Vietnam
Vietnam is one of the most compelling places in Asia to spend time and one of the worst to plan a permanent retirement around, because it has no retirement visa. There is no category that grants long-term residence on the basis of a pension, and no practical path to permanent residency for a retiree without a Vietnamese family connection. What people actually do is rotate: a three-month business or tourist visa, renewed, sometimes with a border run, sometimes through a sponsoring company. It works until it does not, and Vietnam has tightened and loosened these rules repeatedly. Set against that structural problem, the appeal is real: extremely low costs, excellent food, dramatic coastline, fast internet and a country with more forward energy than almost anywhere. Vietnam is a superb place to spend six months. It is not a place to build a twenty-year plan without a family tie.
Philippines
The Philippines runs the most generous retirement visa in Asia. The Special Resident Retiree Visa gives indefinite permanent residence in exchange for a bank deposit that can be as little as 15,000 dollars for an applicant over 50 with a pension, and the deposit can later be converted into a property investment. English is an official language and is used in government, medicine, business and education, which makes daily life easier than anywhere else in Asia except Malaysia. The Philippines is also the destination with the deepest historical and family connections to the United States. Against that: healthcare quality outside Metro Manila and Cebu is limited, typhoons are a genuine annual planning factor, and infrastructure outside the main cities is poor. The SRRV was restructured in September 2025, lowering the minimum age to 40 and reshaping the deposit tiers.
