Healthcare in Colombia for American Retirees
Healthcare in Colombia
How healthcare works in Colombia for a foreign resident: what the public system will and will not do for you, what private cover costs, and where the system is weak.
Colombia has one of the best-regarded health systems in Latin America. Several Colombian hospitals appear consistently in regional top-twenty rankings, notably FundaciĂłn Valle del Lili in Cali, FundaciĂłn Santa Fe in Bogotá and Hospital Pablo TobĂłn Uribe in MedellĂn. The structure is a universal insurance model with competing insurers, called EPS, plus an optional private prepaid tier.
Access to the public system
Visa holders are required to enrol in an EPS. Contributions are assessed at roughly 12 percent of declared income with a floor tied to the minimum wage, which for a retiree declaring modest income can be as little as 100 to 200 dollars a month for comprehensive cover with no exclusion for pre-existing conditions after the waiting periods.
What private care costs
Medicina prepagada, the private top-up tier that gives faster access and better facilities, commonly costs 80 to 250 dollars a month depending on age. A private specialist consultation without insurance is typically 30 to 60 dollars.
What the visa requires
You need private international insurance for the visa application itself. Once resident, the EPS enrolment is compulsory and the prepaid plan is optional but widely used.
Where it is strong
Excellent specialist medicine, very low costs, short waits in the prepaid tier, and a genuine culture of medical tourism for dentistry, ophthalmology and cardiac care. Many physicians trained in the United States or Europe.
Where it is weak
The EPS system has been under financial strain and several insurers have been placed under government intervention, which has caused disruption for members. English is not common among medical staff outside the top private hospitals. Rural care is basic.
Medicare
Medicare does not cover you in Colombia.
Healthcare in Colombia: common questions
Will Medicare cover me in Colombia?
No. Original Medicare does not pay for care outside the United States except in a few narrow situations. Most retirees keep premium-free Part A, make a deliberate decision on Part B based on how often they will return to the U.S. for care, and buy local or international cover.
