Twenty minutes from the Mexican border, which puts Chetumal shopping and Mérida healthcare within reach. The cheapest expat area in the country and the most practical for anyone with medical considerations.

Inland retirees, gardeners and those escaping coastal heat and hurricanes.
Rolling hills, rivers, Maya sites, cooler and drier than the coast, and far from hurricane storm surge. Land is cheap and self-sufficiency is a common theme.

Tropical, hot and humid, with a dry season from February to May and a wet season from June to November which is also hurricane season. The Cayo hills inland are noticeably cooler and drier and are outside the storm surge zone.
Belize has one of the higher homicide rates in the hemisphere, and this needs to be stated honestly. It is heavily concentrated in specific southern districts of Belize City and is largely gang-related. The tourist and expatriate areas, including Ambergris Caye, Placencia, Cayo and Corozal, are far safer, and most foreign residents report feeling secure. Burglary and opportunistic theft are the realistic risks for a resident.
English is the official language and is used everywhere in government, courts and business. Kriol is the everyday spoken language and Spanish is widely spoken in the north and west.
Belizean banks are thorough with American applicants because of international compliance pressure, and account opening takes time and documentation. The QRP requires the qualifying income to be deposited into a Belizean account, so this has to work.
A U.S. licence is valid for a period after arrival; residents obtain a Belizean licence readily. Roads outside the four main highways are unpaved and a high-clearance vehicle is a practical necessity.
Available but expensive by regional standards, with a single dominant provider. Starlink has made a substantial difference in rural areas.
An import permit from the Belize Agricultural Health Authority, rabies vaccination and a USDA-endorsed health certificate.
QRP holders can import household goods, a vehicle, a boat and a light aircraft duty free within a defined window. Given that Belizean import duties are high, this exemption is one of the most financially significant parts of the program.
One month per year on the QRP. One continuous year with no more than 14 days of absence for ordinary permanent residency.
Rent, for at least six to twelve months. Neighbourhoods that look identical online differ enormously in noise, water pressure, internet reliability, walkability and winter light, and none of that is visible from a listing. Almost every experienced expatriate gives this advice and almost every new arrival ignores it.
Work backwards from healthcare and climate, which are the two things you cannot change once you arrive. Then weigh community, cost and language. Most people over-weight cost at the start and under-weight distance from a hospital that can handle something serious.
