New York Apostille for Colombia — Poderes and Convalidacion

New York Apostille for Colombia — Poderes and Convalidacion

Colombia accepts New York apostilles cleanly and the U.S. side of the process is straightforward. What needs deciding early is who does the translation, because Colombian entities are specific about it and a notaría and a university will not necessarily accept the same thing.

Colombia accepts apostilles

Colombia is a party to the 1961 Hague Convention, so an apostille from the New York Department of State is accepted without consular legalization. The document then goes to the receiving Colombian entity — a notaría, the Registraduría, the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores, a university or a court.

What New York sends

Dual nationality and civil registry: birth certificate and marriage certificate records, most of them New York City records subject to the Letter of Exemplification and County Clerk steps. Property, succession and company representation: an apostilled power of attorney. Residency and visas: a DCJS background check certificate. Convalidación of a U.S. degree before the Ministerio de Educación: apostilled transcript or diploma records — one of the slower Colombian processes, worth starting well ahead of any enrolment or job date.

Translation into Spanish is required for official use, and Colombian entities commonly require an official translator recognised in Colombia or a translation certified through the consulate. Confirm with the specific receiving entity rather than assuming one standard covers them all.

Poderes for Colombian notarías

Colombian notarías expect full identifying data — passport or cédula numbers for both parties — and a specific description of the authority granted. Broad general powers are frequently refused. Get the wording from the receiving notaría or lawyer, sign before a New York notary, and route the document through the County Clerk of the county where that notary is certified before the apostille.

Documents coming the other way

A Colombian document for use in New York is apostilled by Colombia’s Cancillería, not by us. What we do handle is the certified English translation once it arrives.

How we handle it

  1. Tell us the document and what the consulate or receiving authority asked for. We identify the certification chain before anything is ordered.
  2. We obtain certified copies where needed, arrange notarization, and confirm which County Clerk the document has to pass through.
  3. We file at the New York Department of State counter in person rather than posting it into the queue.
  4. Certified translation runs in parallel, to the standard the destination actually accepts.
  5. The finished set is couriered to you, or directly to your lawyer or representative abroad.
Does Colombia accept a New York apostille?

Yes. Colombia is a party to the 1961 Hague Convention, so a New York Department of State apostille is accepted without consular legalization.

Who should translate my documents?

Colombian entities commonly require an official translator recognised in Colombia or a translation certified through the consulate. Requirements differ between notarías, universities and ministries.

What is needed for convalidación of a U.S. degree?

Apostilled transcripts and diploma documentation, translated, submitted to the Ministerio de Educación. The ministry review is the slow stage, so begin the document work early.

Can I handle a property sale in Colombia from New York?

Yes, with an apostilled poder. Include passport or cédula numbers for both parties and enumerate the powers granted.
