Healthcare in Malaysia for American Retirees
Healthcare in Malaysia
How healthcare works in Malaysia for a foreign resident: what the public system will and will not do for you, what private cover costs, and where the system is weak.
Malaysian private healthcare is very good and inexpensive, with a concentration of excellent hospitals in Penang and Kuala Lumpur. Penang has drawn regional medical tourists for decades, particularly from Indonesia. Everything happens in English, which removes the single biggest friction point Americans face in Thailand, Vietnam or Latin America.
Access to the public system
Foreign residents are generally not eligible for subsidised public healthcare and use the private system.
What private care costs
A private specialist consultation typically costs 25 to 60 dollars. Major procedures cost a fraction of U.S. prices at internationally accredited hospitals. Private insurance for a couple in their sixties runs roughly 250 to 600 dollars a month and, as everywhere in Asia, becomes difficult to obtain new after about 70.
What the visa requires
MM2H requires medical insurance valid in Malaysia and a medical examination. Age-related availability is the long-term risk.
Where it is strong
English throughout, international accreditation, low prices, short waits, and hospitals in Penang and KL that Americans consistently rate highly.
Where it is weak
No public safety net for foreigners. Insurance at advanced ages. Care outside Penang, KL, Johor and Kuching is more limited.
Medicare
Medicare does not cover you in Malaysia.
Healthcare in Malaysia: common questions
Will Medicare cover me in Malaysia?
No. Original Medicare does not pay for care outside the United States except in a few narrow situations. Most retirees keep premium-free Part A, make a deliberate decision on Part B based on how often they will return to the U.S. for care, and buy local or international cover.
