Tbilisi has hot dry summers and cold winters with occasional snow, plus poor winter air quality in the valley. Batumi on the Black Sea is subtropical, humid and among the wettest places in Europe. The mountains are alpine with heavy snow.
Georgia has low ordinary crime and Tbilisi is safe to walk at night. The risks are political rather than criminal: the Russian-occupied territories of Abkhazia and South Ossetia are inside internationally recognised borders and should not be approached, and Georgian politics has been turbulent since 2024 with large protests in Tbilisi.
Georgian has its own alphabet and belongs to a language family unrelated to any other major language, which makes it exceptionally hard to learn. Russian is widely understood by older Georgians and English by younger ones, and Tbilisi has enough English to function.
Georgian banks have historically been unusually easy for foreigners to open accounts with, including on a tourist entry, and offer multi-currency accounts and high interest on lari deposits. Compliance has tightened but Georgia remains among the easiest places in the world for an American to open a foreign account. Remember that this triggers FBAR reporting.
A U.S. licence is valid for a period; residents obtain a Georgian licence. Driving standards are poor and mountain roads are demanding.

Household goods can be imported with duties applying. Most people arriving in Georgia bring little.

Rent, for at least six to twelve months. Neighbourhoods that look identical online differ enormously in noise, water pressure, internet reliability, walkability and winter light, and none of that is visible from a listing. Almost every experienced expatriate gives this advice and almost every new arrival ignores it.
Work backwards from healthcare and climate, which are the two things you cannot change once you arrive. Then weigh community, cost and language. Most people over-weight cost at the start and under-weight distance from a hospital that can handle something serious.
