Croatia is among the safest countries in Europe with very low violent crime. Note that some rural areas of the former front lines still have marked minefields; stay on paths and heed signage in those regions.
Croatian is a Slavic language and is difficult for English speakers, and it is required for permanent residence and citizenship. English proficiency is high along the coast and among younger Croatians, but administration is conducted in Croatian.
An OIB personal identification number is required. Croatian banks are straightforward once you have it, and Croatia adopting the euro in 2023 removed the currency complications that used to exist.
A U.S. licence with an International Driving Permit works initially. Residents exchange for a Croatian licence, generally without a test for U.S. licence holders, though practice varies.

Rent, for at least six to twelve months. Neighbourhoods that look identical online differ enormously in noise, water pressure, internet reliability, walkability and winter light, and none of that is visible from a listing. Almost every experienced expatriate gives this advice and almost every new arrival ignores it.
Work backwards from healthcare and climate, which are the two things you cannot change once you arrive. Then weigh community, cost and language. Most people over-weight cost at the start and under-weight distance from a hospital that can handle something serious.
