Brazil

Brazil grants a retirement visa, the VITEM XIV, on proof of 2,000 U.S. dollars a month of pension income plus 400 dollars for each dependant. That is a low bar for a country with world-class private hospitals in SĂŁo Paulo, a coastline longer than the continental United States, and a currency that has been persistently weak against the dollar. The catch is that Brazil requires you to transfer the pension into a Brazilian bank account each month as an ongoing condition, which exposes the full amount to the exchange rate and to Brazilian financial reporting. Language is a genuine barrier: Portuguese is essential and English proficiency is low. Security requires the same neighbourhood-level judgement as Colombia. For the right person Brazil is extraordinary value; it is not a soft landing.

Argentina

Buenos Aires is the most European city in the Americas: belle époque architecture, an extraordinary cafe and theatre culture, world-class beef and wine, and public hospitals that treat everyone including foreigners free of charge. For a dollar-earning retiree it can be astonishingly cheap. The problem is the reason it is cheap. Argentina has cycled through inflation crises, currency controls, multiple exchange rates and debt defaults for decades, and while the macroeconomic picture has changed substantially since 2024, planning a twenty-year retirement around Argentine monetary policy requires either a high tolerance for volatility or a deliberate strategy of holding assets outside the country. Argentina also offers one of the fastest naturalisation routes in the world at two years of residence.

The real difference

  • On the measures we track these two are unusually close. The deciding factors are likely to be language, climate and where you already know people.

Brazil or Argentina: common questions

Is Brazil or Argentina cheaper to retire in?

Argentina is cheaper. A couple living comfortably needs about $2,100 a month there, against $2,300 in the other, a difference of roughly 9 percent. That gap is small enough that your choice of city inside either country will matter more than the country itself.

Which has the lower income requirement?

Argentina, at $1,500 a month on the Pensionado Visa (Temporary Residence for pensioners), against $1,500 for the other. Remember that a visa threshold is what the government asks you to prove, not what you need to live on, and the two numbers are often very different.

Which is faster to get residency in?

Brazil is typically faster: about 7 months for Brazil and 9 months for Argentina. In both cases the decision is rarely the slow part; appointment availability and document lead times are.

Do my documents need an apostille for both?

Yes. Both Brazil and Argentina are parties to the Hague Apostille Convention, so an apostille is the whole chain for each. Your FBI Identity History Summary still goes to the U.S. Department of State rather than a Secretary of State, because it is a federal record.

Which has better healthcare?

They score similarly on our assessment, 7 and 7 out of 10. At that point the deciding factor is not the country but the distance from where you would actually live to a hospital that can handle something serious.
