- Income threshold
- $1,370 / month
- Minimum age
- None
- Validity
- Up to three years.
- Permanent residence
- Five years of continuous M visa status makes you eligible for the R (Resident) visa, which is effectively permanent residency.
- Processing
- 1 to 3 months, among the fastest processes anywhere
The legal basis
Resolution 5477 of 2022 of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as amended.
The financial test in detail
Three times the Colombian legal monthly minimum wage (SMMLV). For 2026 that is roughly 5,252,715 Colombian pesos per month, which converts to approximately 1,350 to 1,400 U.S. dollars depending on the exchange rate. The peso figure is fixed; the dollar equivalent moves daily and the peso amount is reset every January.
Savings
None for the pension route.
Age
There is no minimum age. What matters is holding a recognised pension, not being of a particular age.
What the status gives you
- Renewal
- Renewable while the pension continues.
- Work rights
- The M-11 does not carry general work authorisation, but Colombia is relaxed about foreign-source remote income and holders may hold shares and receive dividends.
- How much time you must spend there
- You must not be outside Colombia for more than six continuous months, or the visa lapses. This catches people who treat it as a backup residency.
- Citizenship
- Five years holding the R visa, so ten years in total, reduced for those married to Colombians or with Colombian children. Colombia permits dual citizenship.
- Government fees
- Visa: 282 USD. Residence permit: 60 USD. A study fee of roughly 55 dollars plus a visa issuance fee of around 230 dollars for U.S. nationals, then the cédula de extranjería foreigner ID card.
- 1 Obtain and apostille the pension letter For Social Security, the SSA benefit verification letter. Colombia requires the document to be apostilled and translated into Spanish by an officially certified translator.
- 2 Buy health insurance valid in Colombia A policy covering the full visa period with coverage in Colombia. Once resident you will also be required to enrol in an EPS.
- 3 Apply online through the Cancillería portal The whole application is submitted digitally: form, passport scan, photo, apostilled and translated pension proof, bank statements and insurance. No consular appointment is required in most cases.
- 4 Pay the study fee and await the decision Decisions commonly come back in one to three weeks. The ministry may request additional documents through the portal, so watch the email address you registered.
- 5 Pay the issuance fee and receive the visa The visa is issued electronically and can be printed. There is no passport sticker in the ordinary case.
- 6 Register and get the cédula de extranjería within 15 days of entry Register the visa with Migración Colombia and obtain the foreigner identity card. This is what you will actually use for banking, healthcare and daily life. The 15-day window is enforced with fines.
- 7 Enrol in an EPS health plan Visa holders are required to affiliate to the Colombian health system. Contributions are calculated on declared income, commonly around 12 percent, with a floor tied to the minimum wage.

Your document checklist for this route
8 documents in total, of which 2 need authentication: 1 through the U.S. Department of State and 1 through a Secretary of State. All authenticated documents also need certified translation into Spanish.
- U.S. passport Identity and the physical book the visa is placed in. Lead time: Routine renewal takes weeks; check current published times
- Passport-format photographs Every application. Specifications differ by country and are enforced strictly. Lead time: Same day
- National long-stay visa application form The core filing. Almost always country-specific and often only valid if printed from the consulate portal. Lead time: Same day
- Social Security benefit verification letter U.S. Department of State, Office of Authentications (federal) Apostille The single most-used proof of "guaranteed lifetime pension" for pensionado-style visas. Panama, Costa Rica, Colombia and Ecuador all key on it. Lead time: Same day online
- Private pension, annuity or 401(k)/IRA income letter Secretary of State for the issuing state Apostille Used where Social Security alone does not meet the threshold, or where the visa requires a lifetime guaranteed payment. Lead time: 5 to 20 days
- Bank and brokerage statements Proof of savings or liquid assets, used either instead of income or alongside it. Lead time: 1 to 10 days
- Private international health insurance certificate Nearly universal. Schengen countries usually require a minimum of EUR 30,000 of coverage valid across the zone; other countries set their own floor. Lead time: 1 to 3 days
- Certified translation of the authenticated set Non-English-speaking destinations require the document and its apostille translated by a translator they recognise. Lead time: 2 to 7 days
Why applications on this route fail
- Missing the 15-day cédula registration window after entering Colombia, which carries fines.
- Letting six continuous months pass outside Colombia, which invalidates the M visa.
- Using a translation not produced by a translator officially certified in Colombia. This is the most common document rejection.
- Assuming the dollar threshold is fixed. It is a peso figure that resets every January and the dollar equivalent moves daily.
Apply here
- Cancillería de Colombia: visa portal The official online application system and current requirements.
- Migración Colombia Cédula de extranjería registration and entry rules.
- 1 Obtain the record Order certified copies from the issuing authority. Do not use photocopies, scans or hospital souvenir certificates.
- 2 Notarise if required Letters and affidavits need a notary acknowledgement before any state can authenticate them. Government-issued vital records do not.
- 3 County clerk (some states) A handful of states require the county clerk to certify the notary commission before the Secretary of State will act.
- 4 Authenticate State-issued documents go to the Secretary of State of the issuing state. Federal documents go to the U.S. Department of State Office of Authentications.
- 5 Apostille or legalise Hague Convention destination: an apostille finishes the chain. Non-Hague destination: the document then goes to that country embassy or consulate for legalisation. For Colombia the apostille ends the chain.
- 6 Certified translation Translate the document together with its apostille. Translating first means paying twice.
- 7 File with the consulate Book the appointment at the consulate with jurisdiction over your state of residence and bring originals plus copies.
The expensive mistake: translating before the document is authenticated. The apostille or legalisation certificate is itself part of what the receiving government reads, so it has to be inside the translation. Do it the other way round and you pay for the same translation twice.
