Where Americans Are Apostilling Documents in 2026: Spain, Portugal & the Latin America Surge

Federal Apostille & Authentication Services  •  2026 Destination Trends Report

Apostille demand is a surprisingly accurate map of where Americans are putting down roots abroad. Looking across the federal documents we authenticate, a clear geographic pattern emerges — and it points squarely at Southern Europe and Latin America. Here is what the destination data tells us, and where we think it is heading next.

The clear front-runners: Spain and Portugal

Two destinations consistently top our volume: Spain and Portugal. Both offer well-known residency pathways (including non-lucrative and digital-nomad style visas), both are magnets for American retirees and remote workers, and both routinely require an apostilled FBI background check plus a certified Spanish or Portuguese translation. That translation requirement is a big reason these two countries also drive a disproportionate share of our translation orders.

Latin America is the growth engine

After the European leaders, a broad cluster of Latin American destinations shows up again and again: Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Chile, Peru, Uruguay, Venezuela, Nicaragua, Brazil, Guatemala, and more. The drivers are a mix of retirement (Panama and Costa Rica are perennial favorites), family and marriage, dual-citizenship claims, and remote work. Nearly all of these are Hague Apostille countries, which keeps the process straightforward.

The "everywhere else" long tail

Beyond those two blocs, we authenticate documents bound for a strikingly diverse set of countries — Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Austria, Belgium, Greece, France, Croatia, Serbia, Cyprus, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Moldova, Israel, Turkey, South Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Australia, Kenya, Andorra, and others. The breadth is the story: Americans are relocating and doing business across every inhabited continent, and each move generates an authentication need.

A note on the non-Hague destinations

A handful of destinations we serve — notably China, Vietnam, and Taiwan — are not covered by the apostille process and instead require embassy or consular legalization. If your document is headed to one of these, the workflow and timeline are different; we explain it in our dedicated guide on apostille vs. embassy legalization. You can confirm a country's status on the HCCH status table.

Our predictions for 2026-2027

  • Southern Europe stays #1. Spain and Portugal's residency programs keep feeding steady FBI-check-plus-translation demand.
  • Latin American retirement accelerates. Panama, Costa Rica, and Ecuador should gain share as cost-of-living migration grows.
  • Translation attach-rates rise. As Spanish/Portuguese destinations grow, more orders will bundle a certified translation from the start.
  • Non-Hague legalization stays niche but sticky. China and Vietnam demand won't disappear; expect continued need for consular legalization expertise.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which countries most often require an apostilled FBI check?

Spain, Portugal, and much of Latin America lead, but dozens of Hague-member countries request one for residency, work, marriage, or citizenship.

Is the apostille the same for every country?

The apostille certificate itself is standardized under the Hague Convention, but translation and delivery requirements vary by destination. Non-Hague countries need embassy legalization instead.

Do I always need a translation?

No — it depends on the destination's language and rules. Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking countries commonly require one.

Can you handle any destination country?

Yes. We authenticate federal documents for Hague apostille countries and handle embassy legalization for non-Hague destinations. Contact us with your country.
