U.S. Apostille, DMV & Sworn Translation Services for Americans in Rome

Italian offices — consulates, comuni, questure, universities — ask for U.S. documents with an apostille attached and an Italian translation alongside. Neither can be produced in Italy. Upload or mail your documents to us and our U.S. offices do the work: federal apostilles hand-delivered to the U.S. Department of State, state apostilles filed with the issuing Secretary of State, plus DMV record requests and sworn translation. Finished originals are couriered to you in Italy.

Since 2025, the Paperwork Has Less Room for Error

Italy's reform of citizenship by descent — Decree-Law 36/2025, in force from 27 March 2025 and converted into Law 74 of 23 May 2025 — did more than narrow who qualifies. It tightened how applications are assessed. Where a small defect in a document set once drew a request for more paperwork, it can now render a file inadmissible outright. The documents stopped being a formality on that date.

What that means in practice is that the apostille, the translation and the consistency of names, dates and places across every generation of records now carry real weight. That is the part we handle: sourcing, authenticating and translating U.S. records so a set arrives in a form an Italian office will accept the first time. We work closely with the Italian consulates and embassy in the United States and follow what each of them currently asks for, because requirements differ from one consular district to the next and change without notice. Whether you qualify is a legal question for the consulate or an Italian citizenship lawyer — the documents are ours.

What We Handle Remotely

Services for Americans in Italy

Citizenship Document Sets

The birth, marriage and death certificates a jure sanguinis file is built from — ordered from the right state, apostilled and translated as a set, with names and dates checked for consistency across generations before anything is submitted.

Vital Records From Any State

Birth, marriage, divorce and death certificates are state documents — a New Jersey birth certificate is apostilled by New Jersey. We file with the correct Secretary of State and clear any county-level step first.

FBI Background Check

Requested for residence permits, adoptions and some visa categories. It is a federal document, so it is authenticated in Washington and nowhere else — our DC office hand-delivers it.

Naturalization & Federal Records

N-550, N-570, N-560 and N-561 certificates, federal court orders, IRS Form 6166 and DD-214s — all federal, all filed through our Washington office.

DMV & Driving Records

Certified driving histories and abstracts requested from your state DMV and apostilled, for insurers and administrative files that want documented proof of your U.S. driving record.

Translation Into Italian

Sworn and certified translation prepared alongside the apostille, so the two arrive together. Tell us which Italian office will receive the file and we will match the form of translation it expects.

Where Italian Files Fail

Four Things That Cost Applicants Months

Three of these are document defects, and all four are visible before anything is submitted — which is the entire argument for having the set reviewed first.

  • Names that do not match across generations A surname Americanised on one certificate and not another, a middle name that appears once, a date transcribed wrong a century ago. Italian offices compare records against each other, and a discrepancy has to be corrected at the issuing state before the apostille — not argued about afterwards.
  • Paying for legalization Italy never asked for Italy is a Hague Apostille Convention member, so an apostille stands on its own and no consular legalization is needed on a U.S. document. If you have been told otherwise, you have been told wrong.
  • Sending a state record to the federal government Washington cannot authenticate an Ohio birth certificate, and Ohio cannot authenticate an FBI report. A citizenship set usually contains both kinds, travelling on separate tracks.
  • Translating before the apostille exists Order the translation too early and it may not cover the apostille itself, which some offices require translated as well. Ordering both together keeps the sequence right.
Questions & Answers

Rome & Italy — Common Questions

Can this all be done remotely from Italy?
Yes, and that is how almost all of it is done. Upload scans or post the originals to our U.S. intake; the apostilled documents and translations come back by courier. Our Rome contact point at Via Antonio Salandra 18, 00187 is there if you would rather speak to someone locally first, but no visit is required at any stage.
Did the 2025 law change what documents I need?
It changed how strictly they are judged more than what the list contains. Apostilled U.S. vital records with Italian translations are still the core of a descent file. What changed on 27 March 2025 is that defects which previously prompted a request for additional paperwork can now make an application inadmissible — so the accuracy of each record, and the agreement between them, matters far more than it used to.
Who still qualifies for citizenship by descent?
Broadly, the reform requires a parent or grandparent born in Italy — a great-grandparent alone is no longer sufficient — with separate provisions where an Italian parent lived in Italy for a period before your birth, and grandfathering for applications already lodged before 27 March 2025. The detail is genuinely intricate and contested in places, so treat this as background rather than advice: confirm your eligibility with the consulate or an Italian citizenship lawyer. We are a document service, not a law firm.
One of my records has a misspelled surname. What now?
It has to be fixed at the source, by the state that issued the record, before the apostille goes on. An amended or corrected certificate is reissued and then authenticated; nothing can be altered after an apostille is attached, and a correction made by hand voids the document. We can tell you which records need amending and handle the reissue and authentication together — it is slower than the straightforward route, so it is worth discovering early.
What kind of Italian translation is required?
That depends on which office receives the file. Some accept a certified translation produced and certified in the United States; others want a translation sworn in Italy before a court, and some consulates certify translations themselves. We produce sworn and certified translation and will match the form your receiving office expects — so ask them first and tell us the answer, rather than paying for a translation that is rejected on a technicality.
What does it cost?
Federal apostilles are $120 per document, flat, with the U.S. government fee included. State-level apostilles are {{STATE_PRICE}}, since each state sets its own fee. Record retrieval, DMV requests, translation and international courier are quoted with the job — for a multi-generation citizenship set we will price the whole thing up front rather than per document.
How long should I allow?
The federal filing runs about 10 business days; state filings vary by state, and ordering a vital record from a state archive can take longer than either. Add the courier legs and a realistic plan for a full citizenship set is a couple of months, more if a record needs amending. Tell us your consulate appointment date at the start — it is the one fixed point in the schedule and everything else is planned backwards from it.
Do you work with the Italian consulates in the U.S.?
Yes — closely. We deal with the Italian consulates and the embassy in the United States regularly, and we track what each consular district currently asks for, which is not uniform: one office may want the apostille itself translated, another may certify translations in house, and checklists change. We are an independent document service rather than an agent of the Italian government, so we cannot decide an application — but we will prepare the set to the standard your particular consulate applies, and tell you where its requirements differ from what you have read elsewhere.
