Does my country accept an apostille, or do I need legalization?

Is my document a New York or a federal matter?

Whoever issued it decides. New York agencies, courts, schools and notaries route to the NY Department of State. Federal agencies — the FBI, USCIS, the IRS, federal courts, the armed forces — route to the U.S. Department of State in Washington, and only there. Identifying this is the first step of intake.

Can I drop documents off between meetings?

Yes — that is a large part of why the office is where it is. Leave the documents on the 8th floor and the finished originals are couriered to whatever address you give us, in the U.S. or overseas. You do not need to return to collect them.

How long does it take?

Federal apostilles run about 10 business days through our Washington office. New York State timelines are quoted at intake, since a county clerk or vital-records step may come first. Consular legalization depends on the consulate — some turn documents around in days, others take several weeks, and we tell you which you are dealing with up front.

Can you handle documents issued outside New York?

Yes. Federal documents are authenticated in Washington regardless of origin, and documents issued by another state are apostilled by that state's Secretary of State — we file with the correct office wherever it sits, including the county-level step in states that require one.
